Champion of the Rainforest
A Year 7's Six Week Course
We have partnered with Sophia Point to deliver a six week course to our Year 7 pupils.
Sophia Point Rainforest Research Centre is a science and education facility located in Guyana, South America. Its aim is to enable Guyanese students to access, study, understand and champion their rainforest, and to lead science and conservation in a vitally important and overlooked ecosystem.
Guyana, a country the size of the UK with a population of just 750,000 on the north-east coast of South America, is dominated by tropical rainforests. These cover more than 85% of Guyana’s land surface and represent some of the last high biodiversity natural landscapes in the world that remain intact.
Since September 2022, Belmont has had the exciting opportunity to work with the Sophia Point Rainforest Research Centre as part of our Future Skills program and to deliver the centre’s six week education course, curated for children in Key Stage 3, ‘Champion of the Rainforest’. During the course, pupils learn why the rainforest matters, better understand the threats it is facing, who is protecting it and what we can do to help.
The six weeks culminate in a letter exchange between pupils at Belmont and pupils at a local primary school in Guyana. This exchange allows Belmontians to communicate with children living in tropical rainforests, learning first hand from different experiences and perspectives, ensuring a better understanding of these unique and important environments. At a time of shared global environmental crises this course helps young people think about how they can become a champion for nature and develop a true global outlook.
