STEAM Week

This week, we celebrated all things STEAM, with the theme "Adapt and Change." Throughout the week, pupils immersed themselves in hands-on activities and lessons designed to spark curiosity and nurture a passion for science, technology, engineering, art, and mathematics.

Year 5 pupils had an unforgettable experience at Mill Hill Senior School’s Science Afternoon, where they conducted vibrant flame tests in Chemistry, using Bunsen Burners for the first time. In Physics, they explored the mysteries of mass and even tested ‘Astronaut Urine’ like real space scientists! It was a day filled with discovery, excitement, and hands-on learning. A huge thank you to the Mill Hill Science Department and Science Scholars for inspiring our young scientists!

Meanwhile, Year 6 kicked off STEAM Week at Mill Hill with an incredible line up of scientific activities. In Biology, they examined their own cheek cells under the microscope and created ‘sweet’ DNA models. Physics challenged them to build sturdy bridges and explore the many ways light shapes our world. In Chemistry, students crafted their own lava lamps, discovering the fascinating properties of oil and water.

Adding to the excitement, Safari Pete visited Belmont with his incredible menagerie of animals, including Maya the Lizard, Juliet the Owl, Lady Gaga the Tarantula, and Drake the Snake. Students were thrilled to meet these fascinating creatures up close!

In their lessons, children explored the famous story of the peppered moth, a classic example of natural selection. Across the school, students took part in engaging activities, including a camouflage moth competition in Science, as well as theme-based lessons in Maths, Computing, Art, and Outdoor Learning.

To witness adaptation and transformation in action, both the upper and lower schools have been given their own butterfly gardens. Over the next few weeks, students will observe as caterpillars undergo metamorphosis, emerging as beautiful butterflies that will eventually be released into the Belmont grounds.

Additionally, the children took part in the House Science Quiz, with results to be announced later.

STEAM Week at Belmont was truly a celebration of discovery, creativity, and learning.
